Intro: Six of Wands Tarot Card - energetic interactions

Tarot Alley uses the Rider Waite type of deck for our meanings, symbols, interpretations, etc.

When determining the Six of Wands tarot card meaning, you should consider that it’s a Wands card and a Six. The Suit of Wands represents energy and inspiration. Sixes represent collaboration, cooperation, and interaction.

In this way, we can determine that the Six of Wands represents energetic interactions. These interactions are typically some form of praise or celebration of accomplishments.

Take a look at the Rider-Waite Six of Wands displayed to the left (or above).

What is your first impression?

Who is the figure? Where are they going? Who are the people (barely visible) carrying the other wands?

There’s no right or wrong answer here, just your interpretation.

The CARD for Personal Growth

Affirmation: I value sincere praise.

You must take pride in yourself. External praise and recognition feels sweet but is outside your control. You must learn to praise, recognize, and please yourself.

Ask Yourself:

  • What standards have you set?
  • To what extent are you meeting them?
  • What kind of recognition do you crave? Why?
  • How freely do you praise the achievement of others?
  • What happens when the parade of praise is over?
  • What kind of winner are you? What kind of loser are you?

Interpreting the Six of Wands

Generally, the Six of Wands represents an energetic interaction. This interaction is likely going to be some form of praise, celebration, or reward for your achievements. Common interactions include:

  • Having your moment “in the spotlight”
  • Being cheered on by a crowd
  • Receiving an award
  • Earning admiration from others

The Reversed Six of Wands

How you read reversals is a personal choice. You can ignore reversals and read them as if the card is upright (this is what I often choose to do) or you can interpret reversals as variations of what they would mean upright. There are 3 common ways to read reversals: as a negative interpretation, as an opposite interpretation, or as a block on the upright interpretation. Check out How to Read Reversals for more information.

Typically, a reversed Six of Wands represents thoughts of superiority in your interactions. Your achievements will feel deserved instead of earned. Common situations include:

  • Being a bad winner or sore loser
  • An inflated ego
  • Looking down on others
  • Craving the spotlight
  • Being insincere in your praise (giving or receiving)
  • Envying the achievements of others

Examples of the Six of Wands

Specific Interpretations

Specific situations are the general interpretation (from above) used for a specific situation (love, career, etc). There is no need to memorize these (or even look them up) if you understand the general interpretation. However, here are some basic interpretations for some specific situations:

Romantically

It’s very common for people to underestimate the effectiveness of a few words of sincere praise and recognition. Do you?

Recognition doesn’t have to be big. In fact, most people only need quiet expressions of your appreciation. How often do you offer praise? There’s no such thing as too much.

Professionally

Your skills are valuable whether they’re recognized or not. If your skills and contributions are celebrated, enjoy it. If they’re not, try to find a way to praise yourself instead of becoming bitter.

Spiritually

Modesty is a key part of the Six of Wands and spirituality. You aren’t spiritual for recognition but that doesn’t mean you can’t feel pride when others recognize your contributions.
